Holy Families & Madonna and Child

Holy Families & Madonna and Child

AFTER RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Compositional and architectural studies

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 32.2 x 20.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850858

A photograph of a drawing by Raphael (c.1509-11) formerly in the Musée Wicar, Lille, and now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lille (inv. no.456r). This drawing features another study for the Virgin on the verso: see RCIN 850860 for a photograph of the verso.

The drawing at the centre of the sheet is a study for Raphael's so-called ‘Alba Madonna’, a painting now in the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC (inv. no.1937.1.24; see RCIN 850853.a for a photograph of the painting). The other sketches may relate to other Virgin and Child compositions by Raphael, possibly the ‘Madonna della Seggiola' (RCIN 850973) and the ‘Madonna della Tenda’ (RCIN 850987), but not directly connected with any known painting by the master. At upper right are some architectural studies.
