Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER THOMAS RICHARD WILLIAMS (1825-71)

'Victoria, Princess Frederick of Prussia, later Empress of Germany (1840-1901) and the infant Prince William, later Wilhelm II (1859-1941)'

Mar 1859

RCIN 2084344

Glass plate negative of a dagurreotype by Thomas Richard Williams taken in March 1859. The dagurreotype features four half-length portraits of Princess Victoria seated, holding her infant son Prince William on her lap. The princess looks down at her son, her face captured in profile.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Whilst the original daguerreotype is no longer part of the Collection, a print from the top right image survives, RCIN 2900157.
