Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

LEONIDA CALDESI (1823-91)

The Royal Family

May 1857

RCIN 2083578

Glass plate negative of the Royal Family at Osborne. From right to left: Princess Alice (face removed), Prince Arthur, Prince Albert, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, Prince Leopold, Princess Louise, Queen Victoria holding the infant Princes Beatrice, Prince Alfred, Victoria, Princess Royal and Princess Louise.

Princes Alice's face was possibly scratched out from this negative because she moved during exposure and therefore was captured blurred, see RCIN 2917847. It seems that her face was then printed from another negative in order to produce the end result, RCIN 2106422.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed.
