6" x 5" glass plate negative showing five soldiers from the Royal Marine Artillery and the Rifle Brigade who served in the Crimean War. From right to left: George Britton, Corporal John Hubbard, Corporal William Chast, Bombardier William Hewlett and Gunner Samuel Smith. They are standing on a raised gravel path with buildings behind and all are wearing military uniform with the Crimean Medal.
These soldiers were awarded the Crimean Medal by Queen Victoria on 18th May 1855 and were later photographed by T R Williams in Portsmouth.
The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g. RCIN 2500145).
