CUNDALL & HOWLETT

Sergeant William Russell

1856

Wet collodion negative | 25.3 x 20.3 cm (whole object) | RCIN 2084916

10" x 8" glass plate negative showing Sergeant William Russell standing in front of a gun carriage with large wheels on the parade ground at Woolwich military barracks. He is wearing military uniform with the Crimean medal and has a rucksack on his back. He holds a rifle with a flag attached in one of his hands while his other forearm is resting on the gun itself.

Sergeant William Russell served with the 5th Battalion of the Royal Artillery during the Crimean War. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited Woolwich to welcome the Royal Artillery home from the Crimea and after their visit commissioned a series of portraits of the men from the photographers Joseph Cundall and Robert Howlett.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g. RCIN 2500186).
