Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER WILLIAM EDWARD KILBURN (1818-91)

'Queen Victoria with the Princess Royal, the Prince of Wales, Princess Alice, Princess Helena and Prince Alfred'

c. 1852

RCIN 2083177

Glass plate negative of a daguerreotype depicting a full-length group portrait of Queen Victoria and her children. The group are positioned, from righ to left, Prince Alfred, Princess Alice, Princess Helena, Queen Victoria, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales and Victoria, Princess Royal. The queen is seated at the centre of the group. Princess Helena rests her head in her mother's lap.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Although the daguerreotype does not seem to exist in the Collection, a variant from the same sittting, in which Queen Victoria has scratched out her face, has survived (RCIN 2932491). A print from this negative exists in the Collection, RCIN 2106398.
