Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER WILLIAM EDWARD KILBURN (1818-91)

'Queen Victoria with Princess Helena and Princess Louise'

c. 1852

RCIN 2083180

Glass plate negative of a daguerreotype depicting a full-length group portrait of Queen Victoria (1819-1901) with two of her daughters. The queen is positioned next to a chair on which Princess Louise (1848-1939) is sitting and Princess Helena (1846-1923) is standing. Waldmann, the dachshund, is visble on the right. Photograph taken in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. The original daguerreotype as well as prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection.
