JOHN JABEZ EDWIN MAYALL (1813-1901)

Queen Victoria (1819-1901) and Princess Alexandra of Denmark, later Queen Alexandra (1844-1925)

Apr 1863

RCIN 2082660

Glass plate negative of a full length double portrait of Princess Alexandra of Denmark and Queen Victoria. Dressed in mourning clothes, the queen is seated facing towards the camera. She gazes down to the right and holds a book in both hands. The Princess stands beside her wearing a ligh coloured dress. They pose beside a bust of Prince Albert.

The photograph was taken following the wedding of Princess Alexandra and Albert Edward, Prince of Wales.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from this negative exists in the Collection, RCINs 2927068. The item is almost identical to RCIN 2082583.
