Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER UNKNOWN PERSON

'Princess Victoria, Duchess of Kent (1786-1861)'

1845-61

RCIN 2083220

Glass plate negative of a daguerreotype of a nearly full-length portrait of Victoria, Duchess of Kent and mother of Queen Victoria (1819-1901). The work depicts the duchess seated beside a side table upon which she rests her hand. She faces three quarters to the left and wears a dark dress and a lace cap decorated with ribbons. The background has been covered by the photographer.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. The original daguerreotype as well as prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection.
