Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER EDUARDO DE MOIRA (1817-87)

'Princess Marie of Baden (1834-1899) later Princess Ernest of Leiningen'

1860-70

RCIN 2082373

Glass plate negative of a portrait miniature of Princess Marie of Baden (1834-99), created by Eduardo de Moira in 1860 (RCIN 422019). The Princess is depicted wearing a dress with deep lace border and a ruby and diamond heart-shaped locket on a gold chain. Her hair dressed with camellias.

Marie, daughter of Leopold, Grand Duke of Baden, and Sophie, daughter of Gustav IV, King of Sweden, married, in 1858, Ernest, Prince of Leiningen, son of Charles, Prince of Leiningen, and Countess Marie von Klebelsburg. They had two children. Her eldest sister, Alexandrine of Baden, married Prince Albert's brother, Ernest II, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.

The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller square.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection.
