Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

WILLIAM BAMBRIDGE (1820-79)

Princess Helena, later Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein (1846-1923) in her Confirmation dress

1861

RCIN 2083669

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Princess Helena standing three-quarters to the right. The princess appears in her Confirmation dress beside a 'staged' altar. She wears white gloves, a jewel on a ribbon round her neck, and holds a Bible or prayer book in her hands.

The photograph was later manipulated to show the princess as if in front of the altar at Whippingham Church in the Isle of Wight, where she received her confirmation in 17 Apr 1861. See RCINs 2914302, 2900585 and 2909703.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed.
