Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

JOHN JABEZ EDWIN MAYALL (1813-1901)

Princess Helena (1846-1923)

Mar 1861

RCIN 2082499

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Princess Helena standing, facing three-quarters to the left. She turns her head to face the camera, and gazes down, to the right. She places her left hand on the pedestal of a plinth located beside her. Her right hand rests by her side. She wears a full length light colour dress with a dark colour sash and bow, and a dark colour shawl over her right arm.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g. RCINs 2900456 and 2900458).
