Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

PRINCE ALFRED, DUKE OF EDINBURGH AND SAXE-COBURG & GOTHA (1844-1900)

Princess Beatrice (1857-1944)

Mar 1862

RCIN 2082696

Glass plate negative featuring two full length portraits of Princess Beatrice seated, her feet resting on a square stone slab. She holds flowers, and looks at the camera. She wears a hairband, her long hair loose over her shoulders. Plants and shrubs can be seen in the background.

The negative image on the left has been scratched out, an act perhaps indicative of a displeasing pose.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from the intact portrait exists in the Collection, RCIN 2900559.
