LEONIDA CALDESI (1823-91)

Princess Alice, later Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-78)

26 - 26 May 1857

RCIN 2083667

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Princess Alice standing, facing to the right, her face captured in profile. She rests her arm on a plinth of the statue of Urania and holds an umbrella in her other hand. She wears a bonnet and a long sleeve, dark coloured dress with a light coloured collar and cuffs. Photograph taken on the terrace at Osborne.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection, RCINs 2900103 and 2917844.
