Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

JOHN JABEZ EDWIN MAYALL (1813-1901)

Princess Alice, later Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-78), and Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII (1841-1910)

May 1860

RCIN 2082596

Glass plate negative of a full length double portrait of Princess Alice and Prince Albert Edward standing arm in arm. Whilst Prince Albert Edward faces to the viewer and looks directly at the camera, his sister is turned three-quarters to the right and gazes ahead. A decorative balustrade can be seen in the background.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection, however a variant from the same sitting is represented by RCIN 2900328.
