Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

FRANCES SALLY DAY (C. 1816-92)

Princess Alice, later Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-78)

Jul 1859

RCIN 2083570

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Princess Alice, later Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-78), standing on a terrace at Osborne House. The princess faces left, her body captured in profile, and turns her head to look straight at the camera. She holds a book with both hands in front of her chest. There is an urn in front of her, on top of a small wall.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection, however a variant from the same sitting is represented by RCIN 2900202.
