Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

THOMAS RICHARD WILLIAMS (1825-71)

Princess Alice, alter Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-78) at her confirmation

21 - 21 Apr 1869

RCIN 2084331

Glass plate negative of Princess Alice, later Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-78), kneeling, facing away from the camera. One side of her face is just visible. She is kneeling at a makeshift altar and holds a prayer book. She wears a light coloured dress trimmed with lace, pearls and earrings.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from this negative exists in the Collection, RCIN 2900174.
