Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

WILLIAM BAMBRIDGE (1820-79)

Prince Louis, later Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine (1837-92) and Princess Alice, later Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-78)

1860

RCIN 2082714

Glass plate negative featuring two full-length double portraits of Princess Alice and Prince Louis standing. Whilst the princess faces towards her future husband, the prince faces towards the camera. In the left image the couple poses arm-in-arm.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection, RCINs 2900425 and 2900426.
