Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

JOHN JABEZ EDWIN MAYALL (1813-1901)

Prince Leopold, later Duke of Albany (1853-84) and Prince Arthur, later Duke of Connaught (1850-1942)

Jun 1860

RCIN 2082520

Glass plate negative of a full length double portrait of Prince Leopold, on the right, and Prince Arthur, on the left. The brothers are seated, facing towards the camera and looking towards the right. Prince Arthur places his arm around his brother's shoulder. They both wear Highland dress. There is a plinth on the far left side of the frame, which is placed next to a posing stand. This studio apparatus, which helped sitters hold still during long exposure times, would have been cropped out by the photographer when creating a print.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from this negative exists in the Collection, RCIN 2900364.
