Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

WILLIAM BAMBRIDGE (1820-79)

Prince Leopold, later Duke of Albany (1853-84)

1 - 1 Dec 1858

RCIN 2084442

Glass plate negative of a full-length portrait of Prince Arthur, later Duke of Connaught (1850-1942), standing, facing slightly towards the right. The prince looks towards the camera and poses with one arm resting on the back of a chair. He wears Highland dress.

The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller frame.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A prints from this negative exists in the Collection, RCIN 2900153.
