Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods
LEONIDA CALDESI (1823-91)
Prince Arthur, later Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught (1850-1942)
1857Wet collodion negative | RCIN 2083637
Glass plate negative of the young Prince Arthur, late Duke of Connaught (1850-1942), bare-chested, with his head leaning on his right hand and his left arm resting on cushion in front of him.
In this photograph, taken by Caldesi in 1857, the Prince has adopted a pose reminiscent of the two putti in Raphael's 'Sistine Madonna'.
The print has been masked out, showing the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller square.
The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print of this work exists in the Royal Collection, RCIN 2900255.
