Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

LEONIDA CALDESI (1823-91)

Prince Arthur, later Duke of Connaught (1850-1942)

7 - 7 Apr 1859

RCIN 2083644

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Prince Arthur standing, facing slightly towards the right. He looks towards the camera and places one arm on the back of a chair. The prince wears the costume of son of King Henry IV, featuring a hat, tunic with pointed collar and tights.

The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller frame.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection, see RCINs 2900165 and 2914289 (for a hand-colour version).
