Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

PRINCE ALFRED, DUKE OF EDINBURGH AND SAXE-COBURG & GOTHA (1844-1900)

Prince Alfred, later Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1844-1900)

c. 1860

RCIN 2082701

Glass plate negative featuring two full-length portraits of Prince Alfred standing. The prince is facing to the right towards a table set with a globe, a telescope and a pile of books. He is wearing a naval uniform and holds his cap in one hand.

The negative image on the left has been scratched out, an act perhaps indicative of a displeasing pose.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection.
