Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER EDWARD HENRY CORBOULD (1815-1905)

Prince Albert, Prince Consort (1819-61)

c.1861

RCIN 2083246

Glass plate negative of a painting of Prince Albert at Balmoral, standing by a gate. There is a lush forest in the background. The painting, by Edward Henry Corbould, was based on a photograph by John Jabez Edwin Mayall taken in March 1861. Please note that this work has been photographed several times.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g. RCIN 2914971).
