Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER LEONIDA CALDESI (1823-91)

Prince Albert Edward and Princess Beatrice

c. 1857

RCIN 2082758

Glass plate negative of two photographs placed side by side on a flat surface. Both photographs were taken by Leonida Caldesi (1823-91) in 1857. The image on the right depicts Princess Beatrice (1857-1944) as an infant, while the one on the left shows Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, later Edward VII (1841-1910) as a young boy.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints of both photograph exist in the Collection, see RCIN 2900104 for Princess Beatrice's and RCIN 2917893 for Prince Albert Edward.
