Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

JOHN JABEZ EDWIN MAYALL (1813-1901)

Prince Albert (1819-61)

Mar 1861

RCIN 2082466

Glass plate negative of a full-length portrait of Prince Albert, Prince Consort. He is depicted facing to the viewer, leaning against a pillar that is partly shielded by drapery. The pillar's pedestal bears a Royal Crest, while a balustrade can be seen in the background.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Several prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g. RCINs 2914951).The item is almost identical, and perhaps a copy, of RCIN 2082556.
