Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER SIR EDWIN LANDSEER (1802-73)

'Prince Albert (1819-1861) and the Princess Royal (1840-1901)'

1851-61

RCIN 2082569

Glass plate negative of a portrait painting created by Sir Edwin Landseer in 1841 (RCIN 450574). The work depicts Prince Albert, who wears Windsor Uniform and Garter ribbon, holding Princess Victoria.

The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to a smaller shape excluding the frame.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection.
