Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER CARL HAAG (1820-1915)

'Morning in the Highlands: The Royal Family ascending Lochnagar'

c. 1853

RCIN 2084873

Glass plate negative of a painting of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, accompanied by the royal children, their governess Miss Bulteel and a number of gillies. The procession up the mountain is led by John Grant and a gillie, followed by Prince Albert on horseback. Behind him comes Princess Alice, her pony led by a gillie, Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria and Albert Edward, Prince of Wales.

The painting was completed in 1853 and is still held in the Royal Collection, RCIN 451257. It was commissioned by Prince Albert from Haag as a Christmas present for the Queen. At the same time Haag also worked on this watercolour, which was a commission from the Queen as a present for her spouse for his birthday the following year (see RCIN 451255). The studies Haag made for these works, as well as other Scottish scenes, were probably also acquired by the royal couple, and were originally kept in a portfolio lettered with the title 'Original Studies from Nature in the Highlands'.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed.
