Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER JOHN BELL (1811-95)

Maquette of the Prince Albert memorial, Kensington Gardens

1863-76

RCIN 2083863

Glass plate negative of a maquette relating to the Prince Albert memorial in Kensington Gardens. It shows a view of 'America', submitted for one of the four outermost allegorical programmes of the monument representing four continents (Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe). It seems that another version of this work was eventually selected for the memorial (see RCIN 2083858).

A card with John Bell's (1811–1895) surname has been placed against the base. The digit following his surname possibly reffers to the version or side of the maquette.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints form this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection.
