Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER JOHN LAWLOR (1820-1901)

Maquette of the Prince Albert memorial, Kensington Gardens

1863-76

RCIN 2083871

Glass plate negative of a maquette relating to the Prince Albert memorial in Kensington Gardens. It shows a view of 'Engineering', submitted for one of the four innermost allegorical programmes of the monument representing four groups of Victorian industrial arts and sciences (agriculture, commerce, engineering and manufacturing). It seems that this is not the version that was eventually selected.

A card with John Lawlor's (1820-1901) surname has been placed against the base.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints form this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection.
