Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

PRINCE ALFRED, DUKE OF EDINBURGH AND SAXE-COBURG & GOTHA (1844-1900)

John Brown (1826-83)

Apr 1865

RCIN 2082573

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of John Brown seated on a chair, facing to the left and gazing ahead, away from the camera. He places his hands on his hips and wears Highland dress. Photograph taken at Windsor.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection, however a variant from the same sitting is represented by RCIN 2917780.

For a glass plate from the same sitting, see RCIN 2082673.
