Group portrait at Buckingham Palace

Glass plate negative of a full-length group portrait taken outside Buckingham Palace. From right to left: Prince Leopold, Princess Louise, Prince Alfred wearing Naval uniform, Princess Alice and Princess Helena.

This photograph was taken the day after Prince Alfred returned home from training for a career in the Royal Navy. He had just passed 'a brilliant examination', and was now a midshipman. Colonel de Ros, at that time Equerry to the Prince Consort, was a keen photographer, and much of his work was placed in the royal photograph albums.

The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller frame.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from this negative exists in the Collection, RCIN 2906821.
