Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

AFTER THOMAS PEARCE (ACTIVE C. 1850S)

Group portrait at Balmoral

c. 1858

RCIN 2083182

Glass plate negative of a daguerreotype showing a group portrait taken at Balmoral. Queen Victoria is seated on her pony, Malakoff, seen in profile facing to the right. Prince Alfred stands beside the pony's thigh, holding his mother's hand. Lady Churchill stands in front of the pony, while John Brown is visible behind the pony holding its reins.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. While the original daguerreotype seems to be historically missing, various photographs from the same sitting exist in the Collection (RCINs 2160069, 2900145, 2906730).
