Grenadier Guards mounting guard at Buckingham Palace

22 Jun 1855

Wet collodion negative | 12.7 x 15.2 cm (whole object) | RCIN 2083125

5" x 6" glass plate negative showing Grenadier Guards who served in the Crimean War mounting guard at Buckingham Palace. There are around thirty soldiers standing in pairs facing right. They are wearing dress uniform and are carrying rifles. Buckingham Palace can be seen behind.

Throughout the war Queen Victoria had taken an active interest in the welfare of the troops and on their return to Britain she met a number of veterans at Buckingham Palace and at the military hospital at Chatham.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g. RCIN 2500172).
