Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

WILLIAM BAMBRIDGE (1820-79)

Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII (1840-1910), at his confirmation

1 - 1 Apr 1858

RCIN 2083634

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of the Prince of Wales. The Prince is kneeling at an altar rail, facing away from the camera. He holds a prayer book in one hand. There is drapery in the background and part of the exterior stone wall of a building on the left, indicating that the photograph was possibly taken outdoors in the grounds of Windsor Castle, rather than inside a chapel.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. A print from this negative exists in the Collection, RCIN 2106425.
