Glass plate negatives

Albert and Victoria’s collection of glass plate negatives show photographers’ working methods

JOHN JABEZ EDWIN MAYALL (1813-1901)

Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, later Edward VII (1841-1910)

9 - 9 Nov 1858

RCIN 2082475

Glass plate negative of a full length portrait of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales standing, facing towards the camera. He rests his left elbow on top of a plinth beside him, where his plumed helmet is also positioned, and places his right hand on his waist. He wears a military uniform with belt, sash over the shoulder, and Garter Star.

The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Prints from this negative do not seem to exist in the Collection, however a variant from the same sitting is represented by RCIN 2915726.
