This photograph of Sir Walter Scott's Monument in Edinburgh is from William Henry Fox Talbot (1800–77) publication Sun Pictures in Scotland. The publication featured 23 original calotypes, or salted paper prints, depicting notable sites in Scotland including Melrose Abbey, Loch Katrine and Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832).  Sun Pictures was one of the first publications to be illustrated with photographs.

Sun Pictures in Scotland was available via subscription. In the list of subscribers, Queen Victoria is the first name listed. 100 copies of Sun Pictures were made, but only an estimated 20 survive.
