This tender portrait depicts Prince Alfred, later Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1844–1900), tending to his younger sister Princess Beatrice (1857–1944), who is seated on his lap.

The photograph was taken in 1859 at Osborne by Frances Sally Day (c. 1816–92). Day was the first woman to photograph the royal family. The series of portraits taken by Day at Osborne provide an intimate insight into the royal family's private life.
