In 1839–9, Prince Albert travelled to Italy on a 'Grand Tour'. His travels in Italy likely inspired his acquisition of a significant selection of photographs depicting views of Italy, including this photograph. 

This photograph depicts the interior walls of the colosseum in Rome. The dark, bold aesthetic of the carbon process accentuates the graphic quality of the work
