The Albert Memorial, Belfast

c. 1903

Platinum print | 19.6 x 14.7 cm (image) (image) | RCIN 2600052

The memorial to Prince Albert in Belfast is a clock tower of Gothic architectural design. Standing on the western face of the tower is a statue of Prince Albert. Positioned on the corners of the tower are three smaller statues of lions holding shields. Several flying buttresses can be seen around the base of the tower with a fence surrounding the bottom of the memorial. There are tramlines on the road in front of the memorial, and a line of horse and carts travels down the street behind the tower. This print is from an album presented to King Edward VII in remembrance of the Royal Visit to Ireland in 1903. The photograph represents how memorials to Prince Albert continued to be recorded in presentation and family albums throughout the twentieth century.
