c.1873Albumen print | 15.9 x 20.6 cm (image) | RCIN 2100604
This photograph of the Prince Consort's Writing Room in Windsor Castle shows two loose-covered chairs, a piano with gilt-metal decoration and porcelain plaques by Erard, a Marsh & Tatham bookcase with Hermes or Greek heads as ornaments, a circular table, a waste paper basket, and a writing desk with gilt-bronze mounts by Morel and Seddon. There are also books, candles and candlesticks, statuettes and ornaments.
One of the paintings may be 'First Born' by Josef van Lerius (WC Inv 557, no longer in the Royal Collection), above the Erard piano. Other paintings are The Temptation of St Anthony by Gallait, Sewa, a dachshund by Landseer and Contemplation by Winterhalter. A hand-coloured photograph of this interior view exists in a Souvenir Album.
