Prince Consort's statue unveiling
Memorialising Albert

Prince Albert's lasting influence can be seen in many mediums

JOHN JABEZ EDWIN MAYALL (1813-1901)

Memorial tape measure

circa 1861

Metal tape measure featuring photographic print under glass | 3.5 x 3.4 cm (whole object) | RCIN 1589.2

This object was collected by Queen Victoria, and it is one of two memorial tape measures in the Royal Collection. While the Queen did not always approve of commercially produced objects, other manafactured objects circulated in the years after Albert's death included dress accessories such as belt clasps and brace buckles, jugs, medallions, and commemorative stationary.

This circular metal tape measure features a photographic print of Prince Albert, seated and holding a hat. There is an inscription on the back that reads 'In memory of his Royal Highness Albert, Prince Consort, Duke of Saxony'.
