This photograph depicts the inauguration and unveiling of the Prince Albert Memorial statue in Coburg. There is a pavilion to the left, for Queen Victoria and her family, as well as officials. The square is filled with many people. People watch the ceremony from the windows of buildings looking out onto the square. In the square there is a group of women wearing white dresses, described as,

white clad maidens of the town, one half with the British, & the other with the Saxon colours, standing on either side & making a very pretty effect

Queen Victoria's Journal, RA VIC/MAIN//QVJ (W) 26 August 1865 Princess Beatrice's copies

Queen Victoria also described the square as being beautifully decorated with garlands and flag poles. The unveiling of the statue took place in the afternoon of Saturday 26 August 1865.

This photograph was acquired by Princess Louise (1848-1939) and is part of an album which belonged to, and was probably compiled by or for the Princess, between 1862 and 1867.
