WILLIAM HOOKHAM CARPENTER (1792-1866)
Letter from William Hookham Carpenter, the Keeper of Prints & Drawings at the British Museum, to Charles Ruland on the photographing of the [Raphael] drawings at the museum, and on the death of J.D. Passavant.
28 Sep 1861Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/199
Carpenter expresses satisfaction that the Prince is pleased with Bambridge's photographs of the drawings at the British Museum, and promises to provide facilities for him to take further photographs as requested by Ruland. He is grieved at the death of Passavant, whose work he praises, and hopes that it will be possible for volumes 3 to 6 of his 'Le Peintre-Graveur', which Passavant was preparing, to be published posthumously. Carpenter appears to have written 'Bainbridge' rather than 'Bambridge', but this is evidently a mistake.
