BUCHANAN, ANDREW; BRITISH ENVOY TO DENMARK 1855-1858

8 Nov 1858

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/311

Buchanan states that the Queen's Messenger is bringing a photograph of a picture attributed to Raphael in the Duke of Alba's collection, together with a duplicate photograph painted over in oils because the photograph is defective. This was commissioned by Count Tascher de la Pagerie. He also reports that the Marquis de St Ysabel has given permission for the photographing of the 'Virgen de la Rosa', No. 794 in the catalogue of the Royal Museum, and of the painting attributed to Giulio Romano, No. 827, mentioned in Becker's first letter, and of the small Raphael mentioned in his last letter, formerly in the Escorial and now No. 798 in the museum catalogue. The picture of which Becker sent a line engraving has not yet been found, however, but a search is to be made. The photographs will be taken as soon as the photographer Charles Clifford returns to Madrid.
