Piloty & Loehle inform Dr Becker that the photographing of original drawings by Raphael in Munich collections has run into an unexpected obstacle: several months ago an official from the royal Kupferstich-Kabinet was refused permission by the Ministry of the Interior to have the drawings in the Bavarian State galleries and art collections photographed.

Piloty & Loehle received advice from an authoritative source, however, that if the Bavarian Royal House Ministry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were informed, through the Bavarian Envoy in London or the British Envoy in Munich, of the Prince Consort's wish to have photographic copies of the Raphael drawings, and were asked to intervene with the Ministry of the Interior, permission would certainly be granted. But for the time being, because permission has previously been refused, Piloty & Loehle cannot themselves proceed any further with the commission.

With regard to the original painting by Raphael which King Ludwig recently bought, which has been mentioned in several newspapers but has not yet been reproduced, Piloty & Loehle would be prepared to have a lithograph made of it on the same terms as the Raphael pictures of which they supplied lithographs earlier (see VIC/ADDA10/85/339, VIC/ADDA10/85/340, RAPHAEL/3/342 and VIC/ADDA10/85/346). They do not consider it suitable for photography.

They will send one copy of the 'Cinderella' engraving, as requested, and ask Becker to show it both to the Prince Consort and to the Queen's Librarian, as it could be considered worthy of a place in both collections.

They will await further instructions before sending the next instalments of their productions as mentioned in their most recent letter.
