LUDWIG GRÜNER (1801-82)
Letter from Ludwig Gruner to Dr. Ernst Becker sending photographs (and engravings?) of Raphael drawings and other items.
27 Dec 1858Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/384
Gruner tells Dr. Becker that the package for the Prince Consort has only just been sent; he was waiting for unmounted prints of Lo Sposalizio and St Michael from Milan but was unable to get them. But the name [and address] of the photographer are shown on the photograph of Lo Sposalizio - L. Sacchi of Galleria de Cristoforis 44-45.
The package has been sent to Gruner's usual agent, Mr Gammon of Lime Street, and Gruner suggests ways in which Becker can have it speedily delivered to him. He lists the contents:
1. Four sheets of the Stanzas
2. Clemency ('Sanftmuth' - 'Mansuetudo') from the Sala di Costantino
3. Christ and St Mauro from Perugia
4. Lo Sposalizio - photograph
5. La Scuola d'Atena - photograph
6. St. Michael - photograph
7. Two studies for Raphael Madonnas - photogaphs
8. Series of drawings and plates of the marriage festivities.
Gruner adds that Becker now has all those which have been engraved. He has also included some packages from [?Freifräulein von Bornstedt] relating to the Battle of Wavre, a letter for Becker and a small package for ? [illegible], which Becker should dispose of as he thinks best; it cannot be a very pleasant subject for the English.
He asks Becker to thank the Prince Consort for the £25 he has sent (see RAPHAEL/3/380), and he has added two sheets of large prints from No. VI of the 'Biebelheft' [?series of biblical illustrations].
Some passages in this letter seem obscure and are difficult to read; it has been assumed that 'Freifräuhl von Bornstaedt' refers to Baroness Luise von Bornstedt, although the connection between her and the Battle of Wavre is not clear.
