GRUNER, LUDWIG: DIRECTOR OF THE KÖNIGLICHES KUPFERSTICH-KABINETT, DRESDEN

Letter from Ludwig Gruner to Dr. Ernst Becker giving further details of the photographs of works by Raphael which he is offering to send.

7 Dec 1858

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/273

In response to Dr. Becker's request (see VIC/ADDA10/85/272), Gruner lists the photographs he can send if the Prince does not already possess them.

1) The cartoon for the School of Athens in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana (he gives the Passavant reference); unfortunately it was photographed through the glass, so that the rods holding the glass have come out as perpendicular lines, but it is a very good photograph. It measures 3' by 1' and costs 17 shillings. 2) A superb original drawing by Raphael, also in the Ambrosiana but missed by or unknown to Passavant, a study for the picture of the Archangel Michael in Paris. The photograph measures 13" by 6 1/2" and it costs 4/6d. 3) A large photograph of the original painting by Raphael in the Brera Gallery in Milan [the Marriage of the Virgin], measuring 2' by 1'8", and it costs 17 shillings.

Gruner asks whether in the new year the Prince would pay him at least half of the sum promised to him for preparing the ?list of Raphael's pictures. A note by Becker at the end of the letter records his reply of 11 December instructing Gruner to send the photographs and telling him that the Prince will pay him £25; he asks Gruner for his ideas about the Loggia paintings, tells him to send a bill, and asks how he is getting on with his drawing for the Council Room at Osborne.
