SIR JOHN CHARLES ROBINSON (1824-1913)

Letter from John Charles Robinson, the Keeper of Art Collections at the South Kensingon Museum, to Charles Ruland about photographs of Raphael drawings which he is sending, and others he has been unable to obtain.

27 Mar 1861

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/153

Robinson writes that he has sent Ruland two more of the photographs he asked for; apart from the British Museum drawings, this leaves only two outstanding. One belongs to Sir T. Phillips, who brought it to the Museum on a rainy day when it could not be photographed and refuses to bring it again. But Robinson thinks it not important and possibly dubious. The other is a fragment of a cartoon belonging to Mr Morant; Thompson considers the negative a failure, and it is of doubtful authenticity, but it could be photographed again if the Prince Consort wished. The photography of the British Museum's drawings was suspended while Robinson was in Italy and he does not think the present moment suitable to resume. He suggests that enquiries be made as to Raphael drawings in the collections of the Earls of Pembroke and Carlisle at Wilton and Castle Howard. He hopes Ruland will come with Bernard Woodward (the Queen's Librarian at Windsor) to see his own drawings.

Mr Morant is assumed to be George John Morant, who took over his father George's picture framing and interior decorating business in Bond Street. In the following letter (see VIC/ADDA10/85/154) he is described as Mr Morant of Bond Street.
