PASSAVANT, JOHANN DAVID, PROFESSOR; CURATOR OF THE STÄDEL'SCHES KUNSTITUT IN FRANKFURT, BIOGRAPHER OF RAPHAEL

Letter from J.D. Passavant to Dr. Ernst Becker enquiring after the photographs of the Raphael Cartoons which he had requested and asking how to obtain photographs of the Raphael drawings in Oxford and at the Louvre; also acknowledging receipt of a collect

4 Nov 1859

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/418

Passavant writes that since Becker sent him the 28 photographs of parts of the Raphael Cartoons he has received neither a bill nor any of the other photographs he had requested. He presumes that the problem caused by the shortage of suitable paper for photography must have been solved by now, and asks Becker to have the missing photographs sent to him as soon as possible.

He goes on to ask how he can obtain copies of the photographs of the Raphael drawings in Oxford and at the Louvre which the Prince Consort has had made, at a reasonable price. His institute bought photographs of Old Master drawings in the British Museum some time ago, through Colnaghi, for which they paid 90 Rheinthaler, but the British Museum is now selling unmounted copies for less than 20. So Passavant wishes to acquire the copies of the Oxford and Louvre drawings direct from source.

Passavant reports that Dr. Becker's brother has brought him some photographs and facsimiles of works by Raphael, about which he gathers Dr. Becker intends to write to him. He assumes that the facsimiles are etchings by St Morys, but he does not think that they are in the Paris edition of St Morys's works; they may be from the edition published in London in 1794, which Passavant has never seen, and which is listed as no. 9890 in Weigel's Kunstcatalog. He adds that the only one which he considers to be after Raphael is the mother with two children, which forms part of his no. 658. He concludes with the news that the French translation of his work on Raphael is about to be published.

Becker has added a postscript saying that this letter has been dealt with by his own letter (see VIC/ADDA10/85/417), with which it crossed.
